Heart Valve Replacement Surgery
Sunday, October 21st, 2007Well, one cause of heart failure is a defective aortic valve. If the valve does not function correctly when it becomes leaky or blocked, severe angina and heart failure may sometimes develop. Canada however has pioneered new techniques of correctly replacing these valves.

"This is a new procedure. When we started, people didn't think it was going to work," says Dr. Webb. "So we took patients who were thought to be too high a risk for conventional surgery."

Sunday, October 14th, 2007I know this really does not have anything to do with Heart Failure, but since this site is committed to bring news concerning the world of medicine, I thought it would be right to list the winners for the Noble Prize in medicine. Their names are
“for their discoveries of principles for introducing specific gene modifications in mice by the use of embryonic stem cells.” We all know how important stem cells are, but these guys were actually able to alter genes in mice using them. Hopefully this will also allow future improvements in using stem cells on heart failure patients as shown in the post previous to this one.

Stem Cells Leading the way for HF
Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007Last year, The Institute of Cellular Medicine treated a CHF patient that had no alternative choices with stem cells. Since then she has recovered from the treatment and an echo has confirmed that her ejection fraction rose from 30% to 50% which is in the normal range. It seems as if this treatment will go a long way in the future and for no-option patients alike.
