Doctors Debate Heart Drilling to Treat Chest Pains

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

Well, I never even knew there was a study about relieving chest pain by drilling but I guess I was wrong.

” Two newly published studies indicate that a laser drill treatment for heart patients appears to relieve chest pain, but some cardiologists are questioning whether the surgery’s benefits are merely an illusion.” (CNN.COM)

Well it appears that surgeons drill approximately 10 to 50 holes in the heart using whats called a transmyocardial laser revascularization (TMR). This became available for heart patients whose severe chest pain were not relieved by noninvasive surgery or medication.

Well, now studies show that the treatment can be even more deadly that actually helping patients. Clinically, 20% still suffer from chest pains and many report having more severe ones after the procedure. Read more at CNN

What is exactly Heart Failure?

Monday, August 6th, 2007

Hello everyone. I have been receiving many emails asking me what Heart Failure really is, as it sounds like such a general term. I mean, what does it mean to have your heart fail? There can be so many possibilities for a definition. So I am here to tell what Heart Failure really is.

Congestive heart failure (CHF), also known as just the singular Heart Failure, is a condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood to other organs of the body. There are many reasons why this may happen. This includes narrowed arteries, myocardial infarction (heart attack), and others. (A full list can be found Here)

There are many ways to diagnose CHF. However, the most common one is when a patient, with past cardiac history reports being tired and fatiguing quickly. The patient also reports swollen legs or ankles with trouble breathing. Another symptom is weight gain as a cause of fluid being built up in the body. (This is easily treatable with Diuretics and Potassium)
